Oh hey, Guatemala.
How did I end up here? Long before I made the decision to leave my job and make my way across the Eurasian supercontinent (#geographymajor), I had planned a vacation to Guatemala with two of my wonderful friends.
Not one to flake on commitments, especially ones that involve jetting off to tropical locations, I made sure that I was back from Mongolia in time to head right back out. I know, rough life.
Starting in the historical capital of Antigua, we sipped Mezcal and craft brews, wandered cobblestone streets, and enjoyed breathtaking volcano views. Then off to highland Lake Atitlan, where we stayed in an amazing cliffside Airbnb, explored Mayan villages, perused gorgeous textiles and pottery, and hiked steep lakeside trails. And finally up north to the incredible ruins of Tikal, an ancient Mayan city buried in dense rainforest.
It was the best kind of vacation: equal parts adventure and relaxation, with plenty of great food, cold beer, beautiful scenery, lovely hospitality, and some much-needed friend time.
Other things gained from the trip: our new favorite hot sauce. Didn’t quite make it through customs though. In fact, didn’t even make it out of Guatemala. Not for lack of trying. Thank goodness for Amazon.
